In the shadow of last Friday’s 8.9 earthquake in Japan, a tremor that scored a 4.3 shook Lachute, a city in the southwestern corner of the Quebec Canadian province.
Citizens and workers who initially felt the tremble weren’t sure what was happening at first. A nearby manufacturing company produces dynamite, and many thought that an explosion had taken place at the factory.
A local seismologist, Stephen Halchuk, reported that somewhere between 100 and 200 quakes occur in the region each year, but that the majority are too small to be noticeable.
“A quake of 4 or more happens every two to three years,” Halchuk said.
There were no damages or injuries reported
