At Writer's Group today, we were given an exercise to complete in five minutes. A movie - the theme - the music. That was the suggestion to write about. The theme of Showboat is stirring as the movie starts and one waits in anticipation of what the drama has to offer the watcher. It's hidden medley of songs of the music focuses my mind on Captain Andy and his rousing introduction and William Warfield's Old Man River. I can feel the movement of the Cotton Blossom as she slowly sails along the river as the music commences, and the excitement as the music reaches towards the end of its medley. Throughout the movie, snatches of the theme are heard prior to the commencement of the song or dance. For me Showboat epitomizes all that is good in a musical; the lyrics, the music, the choreography, the dances, the plot itself and the famous song Old Man River
